Client: Glade Dale Executive Homes

Location: Pymore Village, Bridport, Dorset

Description of Contract:

We were appointed by this developer to carry out various in channel works within a new development at Pymore Village near Bridport. The new houses are clustered around an old mill complex which is also being converted into appartments. The Environment Agency had been involved in detailed flood modeling of the site and they required work to be carried out to improve the channel flows.

Kingcombe Aquacare installed a total of 300 tonnes of rock armour along both sides of the channel upstream of the main bridge into the site. Some of this was installed adjacent to the discharge from the river into the flood relief channel. This work was carried out using one of our specialist excavators fitted with a grab attachment to place pieces of lumpstone, up to 1 tonne in weight, into the bank. A large scourhole in the bed of the river was also filled to provide an area of riffles downstream of the main weir. Various areas of the bypass channel, fish pass and main channel were all desilted using a combination of long reach and mini excavators, with the silt being taken off site to a licensed tip. An existing reedbed, which provides some flood storage, was partially cut to provide a more diverse and sustainable habitat adjacent to the main river channel.

The Environment Agency had stipulated that the works to the channel must be completed before the upstream migration of sea trout began and that silt from the in-channel works was carefully managed. By completing the project on time and to budget we improved the biodiversity and flow characterisics of the river channel without adversely affecting the progress of the main contractors.
