Green or soft revetment or 'Bioengineering' is a term used to describe techniques that provide a protective soft edge. This form of retaining vulnerable or damaged river banks or lake edges is favoured by the Environment Agency because it is a sustainable, asthetically pleasing and very wildlife friendly way of erosion control. We have the capacity to design, specify and install such solutions using the following techniques:
Live willow spiling
During late autumn, winter and early spring, live willow can be used by weaving together in situ. This method involves driving willow stakes into the bed of the water course and then weaving a lattice of thinner material between the stakes. The willow is then free to root and grow into a strong, wildlife friendly edge. Willow is not suitable for all applications as it may need regular cutting during the growing season. It is not suitable for use in high flow situations such as the outside of a river bend.
Coir fibre products
coir products are made from the fibres found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. Typically, tightly bound 'sausages' and 'mattresses' are used as edge details and colonised with aquatic and moisture loving plants. Depending on the situation the products can be anchored in place by a variety of methods. coir installation is particularly approriate for helping to colonise banks with plants, preventing wave action erosion and disguising unsightly exposed liners. Coir products are often used in conjunction with rock rolls, faggotts and wildfowl protection mesh.
Often used in conjunction with coir products, hazel faggots provide ideal green revetment solutions for river and stream banks. Their lattice of twigs allows solids to settle within them, promoting natural bank stabilisation and plant rooting. They also provides a refuge for small fish and invertebrates which helps to sustain the aquatic ecosystem.
