Waterscapes News 2005 March Creation of wildlife pond and stream
The brief was to create an aquatic habitat to attract a more diverse range of wildlife to this country garden. At the same time we aimed to improve the aethetics with the clever use of rock to create a very natural looking stream. With this in mind we have created areas within the pond of differing depths with various grades of gravel and soil covering the liner. Incorporated within the stream are undercuts, overhangs and ledges to help support amphibians, fish and invertebrates. There are shallow areas where animals and birds can wash and drink. We have lined the feature with EPDM, protected with a geotextile. The stream and landscaping required around 20 tonnes of Purbeck limestone. The whole system is powered by a submersible pump feeding a filtration system housed in the adjacent stable. The water is treated here with a UV lamp, biological media and mechanical filters. There is underwater lighting to further enhance the feature during the hours of darkness. The lights are operated by a remote control. At this point the construction stage is complete and the area is awaiting planting. We are producing a plan with regard to supplying and carrying out the subsequent planting. |
