Client: Private Client (Glasspoole Design Landscape Architects)
Location: Abbots House, Wiltshire Description of Contract: Our Waterscapes team were instructed to build a wildlife pond and trickling stream to define a boundary in this Wiltshire garden. Working to a design concept from a Landscape Architect, the 150 metre long stream is intersected with purbeck stone stratum to give the impression that the water has cut its way through natural rock outcrops. Recirculated water emerges form of a natural looking springhead where it bubbles out from between three large Sarsen stones. The whole stream is reinforced with concrete on top of a geotextile protected Firestone liner. The concrete ensures that children or animals, for example, do not damage the stream bed if they choose to play there. The pond itself is built over green sand. We therefore specified under liner drainage to combat any hydrostatic pressure that could build up in the wetter months. The area is lined with geotextile protected Firestone EPDM. A recirculation system complete with timer switches is buried adjacent to the pond to supply the head of the stream. This system is connected to a mains water supply feeding an automatic top up system. Kingcombe Aquacare were asked by the clients to provide a jetty from which a small boat could be sailed. Once our plans had been approved, Kingcombe Aquacare sourced the green oak material and our engineering staff then machined the wood to size, thickness and shape. Bespoke anchors were also fabricated by our steel engineer. This allowed our team to attend on site, flash the liner around the anchors and build the jetty around them.
