Re-lining of a leaking Japanese Water Garden

On completion, downstream view

Client: Private Client

Location: Chorleywood, Hertfordshire

Description of Contract:

Our Waterscapes team were instructed to recreate a Japanese pond feature after two previous contractors had failed. With exposed liner, incorrect gradient and numerous leaks, it was decided that the old membrane needed removing, the profile re-shaping and a new liner installing. Working around many delicate and specimen plants, our Waterscapes team skillfuly manouvered large machinery into position to carry out the work.

With the liner almost out

The old polypropylene liner was totally removed and taken away by skip. The pond area was reshaped, new pipework trenched in and a Firestone EPDM rubber liner installed. Before surcharging could begin, the liner was protected with a geotextile covering, held in place by an anchor trench around the perimeter of the pond. The cobble beach was recreated and the large glacial boulders replaced. The picture of the completed project is testiment to the quality of workmanship displayed by our Waterscapes team. Apart from recreating the garden path (finished in Golden Breedon Gravel), reinstating the crazy paving and replanting transplanted shrubs, our team dressed the whole area with fresh top soil and finished with turf. This allowed our clients to proceed with an important charity party by the lakeside.

The previous contractors had built a cascade which flowed into the pond. This system had failed to operate from day 1. Our engineers redesigned and replaced the redundant recirculatation system to bring the existing cascade back to life. To allow the client to fully appreciate their water garden, Kingcombe Aquacare supplied and fitted Hunza garden lighting. These, along with the recirculation pumps, are operated by timer switches situated in a small kiosk in the garden. As an algae control measure our client opted to purchase an ultrasonic transponder. This inconspicuous electronic device was installed in the pond margin to combat algae by emitting ultrasonic pulses into the water (for more information click here).
