Mill Pool Restoration Case Study

Client: Private Client

Location: Dorset

Description of Contract: Sluice replacement and revetment of unstable bank

Our client was experiencing problems with silt deposition and a receding bank in a former mill pool fed by a tributary of the River Frome. The old weir walls were not retaining water and so the whole pool required sympathetic restoration.

Our Waterscapes team gained access with a wide tracked excavator to ensure that any footprint was minimal. After draining and removing the silt from the pool, the old sluice was demolished and removed. A new dam wall was constructed with a reinforced concrete core. This was faced with local stone to match the existing elsewhere on site. Built into this was a bespoke stainless penstock. A winding gear was included to ensure that the penstock was easy to use.

To reclaim lost bank and regain the original shape of the old pool, specially treated timber piles were driven in to form a close butted revetment wall. This was backfilled, top soiled and seeded.

Our client now has the option of draining their pool to help prevent the build up of silt in periods of increased flow. The bank is now stabilised, ensuring that their ground no longer receeds during flood events.
