Creation of a Tranquil Water Garden

The finished project, downstream vista

Client: Private Client, (Landscape Architects, Aukett)

Location: Near Melksham, Wiltshire

Description of Contract:

Our client was lucky enough to already have a sizable pond, complete with a cantelever deck area. The brief was to improve the vista from the deck by creating a natural looking cascade.

The terrain proved to be challenging green sand and the area where the cascade was to be built acted as the natural drain for that area. Kingcombe Aquacare were contracted to undertake this exciting project, working closely with the plans provided by the landscape architect.

After excavating the general shape of the cascade, our team installed a number of land drains to ensure that any water draining from the surrounding terrain was harnessed and directed into the waterfall system. 30 tonnes of Purbeck stone were lifted into place, held together with a concrete haunch. The whole system was lined with Firestone EPDM, protected with a geotextile to guarantee the integrity of the system.

A purpose designed pump chamber was buried under a nearby patio area, housing the recirculation pump, automatic mains top up, overfllow and float switch. The whole system is hidden and can be accessed via a disguised man hole. The electrical control panel housing the timer switches is housed in a nearby building.

To complement the cascade, our staff cast two concrete abutments and oversaw the installation of a hardwood bridge.

It's waste ground to start with! What a difference!
